Mission

Call and Response: The Scholarly Journal of the National Black Graduate Student Association (NBGSA) solicits research of publishable quality that addresses areas of intellectual or social concern to communities and persons of African descent for Volume 3. We conceive of Call and Response as a unique space for interdisciplinary conversations between scholars of African descent and scholars who engage work relevant to these communities to take place. As an interdisciplinary publication, we solicit work in areas of business, education, engineering, fine arts, health & medical, humanities, law, science, social science, and other fields and disciplines in which contributors may do work.

Potential contributors should send an abstract of 500-750 words by May 31st, 2010.

  • All abstracts will be peer-reviewed.
  • If your work fits the criteria for publication, we will require a finished paper to be submitted by October 1, 2009.
  • An accepted abstract does not mean your paper will be published. The complete work will go through an extensive review process by a group of reviewers from the contributor’s disciplinary area or interdisciplinary field.
  • All papers should be no more than 7500 words, double-spaced, 12 pt. font, Times New Roman and should use the style of citation most appropriate to the discipline (e.g. APA, MLA, etc.). If there is no standard of citation, contributors should use the Chicago Manual of Style.
  • All contributors must be members of the National Black Graduate Student Association at the time of publication. For more information or to become a member, please visit the membership page.

Book Review Proposals
We publish reviews of books, especially new or recent scholarship that takes inter- or mult-disciplinary approaches to the study of people of African descent. Please send book review proposals of 500-750 words by May 31, 2009. If proposals are accepted, book reviews of 1000-1500 words should be submitted by July 1, 2009.

Please send abstracts for articles and book reviews to callandresponse@nbgsa.org.
